Can LA's New Law For Adult Movies Bring Any Change

In what can only be described as a major move by the city council for the adult film industry, Los Angeles have voted 10-0 in favour of modifying the law for condom use in these films. Now, any adult film that's wanting to acquire a permit must ensure that they use condoms on the film set. Any person who is found to be violating this rule will have their permit revoked and will be fined.

According to the city council, this change has been brought in for two causes. The most essential reason is to stop the spread of STD's on adult film sets in the region. However, the other reason would be to set an example for other city councils. La is hoping that they can be the first city council to 'start a trend' and that others will follow suit, until finally it becomes national law.

Even though the final say on this modification was implemented by the city council, the AIDS Health Care Foundation has been trying to get this alter issued for a long time. Brian Chase of this foundation stated that making this change was "common sense" and that it would help "deal with the spread of std's."

The activists that have been trying to get this changed to the law have stated that this has been an issue for years now. They went onto say that STD's have been spread on film sets simply because the directors did not wish to use the safest durex condoms because they believed that this is something their viewers did not wish to see in their movies.

When the AIM Medical Clinic was closed down a year ago in Los Angeles, many activists really pressed for this change, and they've finally got what they've wished for. Their argument was that there are now fewer places to get tested in the city so more precautions should be taken.

However, you'll find people that do not think this will make any difference. Some believe that this can just push the majority of film sets 'underground'. The law states that inspectors only come to check to see if there's an issue if a complaint is filed, which would mean that somebody on their own set would have to issue a complaint, which is unlikely to take place on an underground set.

Of course, the thousands of individuals that have been trying to get this change implemented will see the modification in law as a huge victory, as it'll at least mean any adult film that wants to follow the law will have to ensure their actors wear condoms.

Many won't be aware that this isn't the first time this policy has come up against the council; however, every single other time it has failed. Diane Duke of the Free Speech Coalition said that this laws has come up to be voted on "several times", and it has failed every time. If this change affects the spread of STD's in the regional area or not only time will tell.
